Consistency is everything in personal care. Products must offer a texture that speaks to a brand’s quality and must perform as expected over time and under a wide variety of conditions. Plasticizers can give formulators the advantage, whether you are aiming to create color cosmetics that stay even and bright, or a pumpable formulation that flows smoothly, with optimal sensory experience.

Enhancing Flowability: A Major Strength of Plasticizers

When the texture you are building relies on solid esters and waxes it is imperative to adjust for crystallization and viscosity. Controlling the formation of the wax matrix by utilizing plasticizers at the optimal moment in formulation allows you to tailor your end product’s texture, managing structure and stability, as the figure shows.

The cone penetration numbers measured with varying structurant: plasticizer ratios of common anhydrous formulas pouring 7°C above congealing point and at room temperature.

The percentage of liquid that a plasticizer replaces in the oil phase can be very low, making a significant difference with a very small change. Plasticizers function to reduce yield stress, resulting in improvements to users’ sensory experience. Lowering resistance and drag and increasing cushion and playtime make cosmetic formulations a pleasure to apply, from squeezables to sticks.

Laying Color Down Evenly

The positive sensory experience of even slip, when combined with smooth application of color, makes a cosmetic formulation irresistible. Pigments need to be well incorporated and held evenly in the wax matrix for colors to stay even and true in use. Color distribution becomes more uniform and stable throughout the product and at the product-skin interface when plasticizers are used in formulation due to the system’s microstructure homogeneity. The same plasticizer that imparts even dispersal of pigments also allows even spreading, creating the right conditions for thin, uniform color application.

Putting the Benefits Together and Putting Them to Work

Our example formulations offer an opportunity to see two plasticizers at work, with both creating smooth, flowing formulations that also bring that springtime pop of color. Customers are increasingly being made aware of the chemistry of the products they use, so formulating with non-phenol/non-phthalate plasticizers offers label appeal.

Glow & Sculpt Bronzer Balm

Formula #: 12/25-258/224/10098-2

Few formulations must combine every positive aspect that plasticizers can impart like a bronzer. Our Glow & Sculpt Bronzer Balm example formulation exhibits those qualities with a creamy, smooth consistency. Kester Wax K-70P also enhances flowability, at the same time it helps to suspend the pigments that give skin a warm, even glow. Rice Bran Wax and Sunflower Wax provide the structure for this vegan, natural, sample formula.

Metallic Liquid Lip

Formula #: 2/19-864/10000/154-11

Flow and color are front and center in a liquid lip formulation. No part of the body requires texture to be so ideal. Metallic Liquid Lip delivers intense metallic shine in a sample formulation featuring the texture enhancing qualities of Kester Wax K-82P. This formula takes on the challenge to create a fashion-forward product that is comfortable to wear. Synkos Wax 2030 gives it soft structure, while the option remains open to use Peg-8 Beeswax or Kostol ApiFree, depending on the audience. Either way, this example formulation is out to shine.
